Our Projects

Real change happens when compassion meets action.

Our Work in Myanmar and Cambodia

Our journey began in 2010, when a team of ENT doctors and anesthesiologists first traveled to Yangon, Myanmar to support and collaborate with local colleagues at the Yangon ENT Hospital.

At the time, Myanmar was still under international boycott. Surgical equipment was scarce, and most microscopes available were either broken or outdated. With the help of the German Embassy in Yangon, our team quickly provided essential surgical instruments and a functioning microscope — allowing life-changing ear surgeries to take place once again.

Between 2011 and 2013, we built an advanced training program for local doctors, led by Dr. Win Htike Kyi, head of the department. His dedication led to a fellowship at the ENT Hospital in Salzburg in 2013. Within three years, Dr. Win mastered middle ear surgery and began teaching his team, creating a self-sustaining cycle of medical education in Yangon.

A major milestone came in 2012, when Prof. Dr. Olze (Berlin Charité), with technical support from Medel, introduced cochlear implant surgery in Myanmar. Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Rasp (Paracelsus University Salzburg), Dr. Win performed these surgeries successfully — enabling deaf adults and children to hear for the first time or regain lost hearing.

Through these efforts, the Yangon ENT Hospital became fully independent in performing middle ear surgery and continues to provide advanced ENT care to this day.

In Mandalay, we began collaborating with local doctors in 2011, a partnership that continues to grow. Together with the Stiftunglife Foundation, we also support medical students in completing their studies.

Following the military coup in Myanmar, travel and in-person visits became impossible. Yet, our commitment never stopped. We transitioned to online training and virtual mentoring, ensuring ongoing support for our colleagues in Yangon and Mandalay.

In 2024, we expanded our mission to Cambodia.

We flew 2 doctors from Phnom Pemh to Europe so they could train with our doctors in Salzburg and Hamburg.

In 2025, we visited Cambodia, where we are now building new partnerships to train local ENT specialists and improve access to ear surgery across the region.
