Following extensive preparatory work, Dr. Max Armstorfer, senior physician at Landeskrankenhaus Salzburg, and Dr. Biesinger set out for Phnom Penh on October 7. Building on the visit of the two colleagues last year, this marks the structured development of a project similar to the one in Myanmar. The goal is to train colleagues in middle-ear surgery so that they can independently operate on both children and adults.

Key points:
For children, this assistance remains life-saving, as chronic infections can be life-threatening.
For both children and adults, restoring good hearing is an important objective.
The Calmette Hospital provides favorable conditions for this effort. Equipment needs to be refined in detail, but anesthesia, patient safety, and hygiene standards are excellent.

A highlight of the current trip was the invitation from the German Ambassador, Mr. Messerer, to a lunch with representatives from the Cambodian Ministry of Health, led by State Secretary Dr. Youk Sambath. Our future work enjoys strong acceptance and support, not least under the patronage of the German Embassy.

This enables a sustainable engagement to proceed.

For February 2026, a team will be assembled consisting of PD Dr. Sophia Häussler and Dr. Armstorfer, an operating room nurse, an anesthesiologist, and an assistant.
